My daughter recently needed 10 days of antibiotics to prevent an infection in her foot, and I wanted to share with you my plan to heal her little gut during and after these antibiotics.
Antibiotics are amazing and life-saving when used in the right way – i.e. to prevent or stop a bacterial infection.
However, when they are used incorrectly, like for a viral infection (like the common cold/flu, or a vomiting bug) they can cause more harm than good.
Antibiotics literally mean “against life” – because they kill all bacteria, good and bad. Probiotics mean “for life” because they support and prop up the good bacteria in our systems.
We all have both good and bad bacteria in our bodies, in fact there are around 2kg of bacteria in our gut alone! And we are outnumbered 10:1 bacteria to human cells.
So, whilst I’m all for antibiotics used correctly – and not overused, we still need to heal and repair our beautiful guts during and after antibiotics.
For now, this is my 10-step plan to heal and repair my daughter’s immunity and gut after antibiotics.
1. EXTRA DOSES VITAMIN C
Vitamin C is one of the building blocks to healthy skin repair and boosted Immunity. It’s a powerful antioxidant for the synthesis of collagen, which helps to make blood vessels and muscles strong. It also enhances the immune system of the body, preventing coughs and colds.
I believe in food as medicine, so for these higher doses of Vitamin C I looked to my pantry and gave my little girls lots of:
- Imbibe Hibiscus and Rosehip water kefir, both for its high Vit. C content, and the probiotic content.
- Oranges and Lemons – lemon juice on salads, lots of citrus to eat – but not organic juice as it’s very high in sugar! Choose to eat the whole fruit.
- Kale has high levels of Vitamin C and none of the sugar, and my daughter loves it! The trick is to chop it really finely then massage it with salt, lemon juice, olive oil and some black pepper – it’s delicious!
2. POSITIVE LANGUAGE
It’s true that the words we speak have impact upon the way we think and feel. So, instead on dwelling on how bad her foot injury was, I spoke to her in a way that made her feel empowered that she could heal.
This is the book I read to help me understand about the mind-body connection. It’s called Mind over Medicine and is written by a Medical Doctor.
When we calm our nervous system, we switch on the parasympathetic nervous system, which tells the body it’s out of the danger of flight or fright mode. This allows the body to relax and lets the healing and repair take over.
4. VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is super-duper important when it comes to boosting immunity. The sun is a fantastic and FREE source of Vitamin D. I recommend getting your large body parts into the sun, to maximise the exposure – aim for 20 minutes or so, daily.
5. PROBIOTIC PILLOWS
My daughter being unwell forced me to look at different clever ways I could include more probiotics and collagen rich gelatin into her diet for a smoother recovery – both to her injury and to her gut. Playing in the kitchen, I created these “Probiotic Pillows” which are delicious and almost sugar free gut healing goodness. I’ll be teaching how to make these in my upcoming course, called KITCHEN ALCHEMY – add your details below if you would like more details:
6. PROBIOTIC HOME MADE BEET KVASS
Beet kvass is a probiotic fermented beet root drink. I absolutely love it! It has heaps of living and blood cleansing properties, from the fermented beetroots, plus it’s sugar free and delicious.
I got my daughter to drink just 1 teaspoon of this everyday.
You can find out more in my book.
7. BONE BROTH
8. ALL NATURAL VIT C AND ZINC LOLLIPOPS
Zinc is another very important trace mineral that helps build a healthy immune response, and also aids in skin repair. I got her a herbal tonic mix for kids that has this mineral in it. I also bought her kids natural sugar free lollipops that have Zinc and Vit. C in them.
9. LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL TO WASH
Lemon essential oil is fabulous as an anti-bacterial and anti-microbial oil. Instead of using the antibacterial hand washes, which will kill all bacteria (good and bad), I put a few drops of doTERRA essential oil in her bath.
10. MILK KEFIR SMOOTHIES EVERYDAY
Milk kefir is a fermented probiotic rich dairy or nut milk based drink. It’s delicious blended with frozen berries or bananas and we have it almost everyday in the morning.
While my daughter was taking antibiotics, I gave her this milk kefir 2 hours after her antibiotics so that the medications didn’t kill the probiotics in the milk kefir.
