Anna is a true Sister Alchemist and creates the most exquisite range of teas and skin care that are so pure they are safe enough to eat. Yep! It’s Edible Beauty.
Created by naturopath and nutritionist Anna Mitsios, this range is an evolution of her love of herbal and natural ingredients.
I absolutely love Anna, and all her incredible creations, and I know you will love them too. My favourite tea is the Fountain of Youth and my favourite skin care (very hard to pick!!!) is the Snowflower Illuminating Oil.
I’m 100% stoked to be talking about Inside Outside Beauty with her.
We’ve often been told that beauty radiates from the gut. How is that so?
Beauty really does start from the inside and it is so wonderful that gut health is now getting the recognition it deserves when it comes to skin health.
Firstly and most importantly a healthy gut ensures that the beauty-giving nutrients and antioxidants you are eating are being absorbed which means that you have all of the building blocks you need for healthy collagen production, skin regeneration and a defence system against free radicals. An unhealthy gut can lead to nutritional deficiencies of key skin regenerating and collagen boosting vitamins especially proteins, fatty acids and B vitamins.
Our gut flora is linked to directly to the microbiome of our skin. A lack of the good guys in the gut can create inflammation, affecting the integrity and protective function of the skin. This can lead to a drop in the microbial power of the skin to fight infection and can create inflammation. Interestingly, research shows that small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), a condition involving inappropriate growth of bacteria in the small intestine, is ten times more prevalent in people with acne rosacea, and that a correction of gut flora can create a marked improvement in this particular skin condition.
A healthy gut also keeps hormone levels in check and ensures that the body’s detoxification system is efficiently removing excess hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Probiotics and prebiotics minimise the transit times of these hormones through the body which ensures that they do not have any of their undesirable effects such as excess skin sebum production or insulin resistance and weight gain.
In your experience, what are two things we can easily do to help beautify our skin?
One of my inside beauty tips is to stop feeding the “bad guys” in your belly. The bad flora in your gut does really have a field day on sugar, dairy and processed grains. These can play havoc with hormones, promote insulin resistance and create free radicals which zap your body of beautifying nutrients, accelerate ageing and promote excess sebum production which leads to acne and break outs. If you can starve the little critters by reducing your intake of foods such as dairy and sugar and increase your consumption of greens, fermented foods and prebiotics, your skin will start to thank you.
On the outside, I recommend that people pay attention to what they are feeding their skin. By providing your skin with an abundance of nutrient rich pure foods and anti-oxidants it will be provided with everything it needs to repair, regenerate and flourish. Being conscious of eliminating ingredients which may be synthetic or “not edible” also ensures that the skin’s PH balance is maintained and that irritation, allergens and toxic substances are reduced.
If you could wave your magic wand and choose just one ingredient to eat or drink for a Glow that radiates from the inside, what would it be?
My favourite food/herb would have to be turmeric. It is such a magical herb when it comes to gut healing, improving liver health and detoxifying and acting as an anti-inflammatory. I take turmeric religiously both in the form of a proper supplement and also as a food supplement in drinks/smoothies and food.
My one drink would have to be an iced green tea, infused with lemon slices, fresh ginger and lime and topped with the Imbibe Rooibos Ginger Honey Turmeric Kefir for a bit of sparkle.
And a magic ingredient for the skin?
One of my favourite ingredients for the skin is the Kakadu Plum which is found in the Edible Beauty No. 3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum and Snowflower Illuminating Face Oil.
This is an incredible ingredient and truly boosts the antioxidant levels of our serum. The reason why it is so antioxidant rich is that is found rowing in arid, remote regions of Australia so it needs to develop a strong antioxidant defence to survive the harsh conditions of the outback. When we use these conditions in our skincare, these super antioxidants transfer across to our skin.
The Kakadu Plum has the world’s highest plant based source of vitamin C. So it works so effectively to boost collagen production and brighten and repair the skin.
