Probiotics, The Missing Link To The Glowiest Of Skin

Probiotics, The Missing Link To The Glowiest Of Skin

Did you know there is a direct link between your gut health and the state of your skin?

Let’s dive deep into this subject that we’re incredibly passionate about and share everything we know with you.

We’ll also bring in Nakisha, one of the amazing Dermal technicians at Aesthetica in Byron Bay and she will dive in deeper with us about the link between skin and gut health.

Essentially, the role of the skin is to protect the internal environment, temperature regulation and hydration of the skin.

“The skin is constantly undergoing renewal resulting in effective cell turnover, where the skin regenerates itself to maintain balance. There are many layers to the skin, and an analogy we like to compare it to is bricks and mortar. The skin cells serve as bricks and collagen makes up the mortar that holds the bricks together. This acts as an effective skin barrier that helps preserve skin moisture, tone, and texture. “

THE SKIN-GUT CONNECTION

Your gut hosts a myriad of diverse bacterial organisms that are constantly communicating with our skin bacteria.

Because the skin is the largest organ of the body, it host’s its own microbiome and there is a direct link between gut health and skin health.

What is the microbiome?

“The microbiome is the genetic information of the bacteria that live inside and on the human body. We have about 10 times as many microbial cells as human cells. Both the skin and the gut are the external interface to the environment. “

Think about it.

Your skin is the barrier to bugs, viruses and other nasties we don’t want to pick up (that’s why we wash our hands!). In the same way, the gut is the internal barrier between food entering the gut and being properly digested - and not leaking out through the gut wall.

Therefore it has been shown there is a bi-directional communication system between the two organs to maintain balance.

Scientific research shows there are a number of anti-inflammatory bacteria that move from the gut to the skin to help fight off infection and support healthy skin renewal.

"When there is imbalance in the gut, it usually manifests with skin infections and inflammation - like acne, rosacea, dermatitis etc."

If we are experiencing gut permeability, or what we call leaky gut, we are actually allowing toxins that aren't being absorbed by the gut for excretion to recirculate through the bloodstream, and usually it will manifest in our skin health.

Common skin conditions have been studied to show how the gut can impact skin health are acne, eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.

We want the removal of toxins through the gut because it's extremely important for our skin health.

Also, in terms of gut health, our beautiful hair, skin and nails is the last place our nutrients are going to go, sadly.

That’s why we can often have hair that breaks off, skin that looks dull and poor digestion.

Our body will utilize the key nutrients for energy production, neurotransmitter production and other essential functions.

"So, when we see poor skin health, we know that there may be gut imbalance and the body is not able to send the essential nutrients to be able to facilitate that healthy skin-glow we all want!"

So, what are probiotics and how do they fit into this picture?

Probiotics are the good bacteria that are crucial to nourishing your gut and microbiome so you have perfect digestion and healthy skin.

Here are just some of the ways probiotics will help you.

IMMUNITY

Around 80% of your immunity is made and housed in your gut - so to help keep your immune system healthy, it's super important to nourish your gut with probiotics.

DIGESTION

You may be eating all the best organic diet on the planet, but if your digestion is weak or slow, you won't be absorbing the nutrients from these foods which means your hair, skin and nails will suffer. Not to mention all that bloating after meals!

HAPPINESS

Your happiness neurotransmitter serotonin is mostly made and housed in your gut so to sustain those feelings of happiness focus on nourishing your gut with living probiotics to assist in creating a happy balance.

SKIN

Your skin is your largest organ and is a key organ of elimination. There is nothing going on in your gut that won't be showing up on your skin.Healthy Gut = Glowing Skin.

HORMONAL BALANCE

Hormonal acne can be linked directly to the state of your gut, because the gut is where many hormones are synthesised, so for helping to reduce hormonal acne look at nourishing your gut with probiotics.
