Stretching across centuries, the love of a mother or for a mother has been depicted through every expression of art, text, poetry, photography and film possible, captivating audiences with the common thread of sentiment and emotion: our Mothers.
And surely there is no other subject that can invoke such strong, sympathetic feelings as the subject of motherhood: whether we have learned from them, known them, love them, lost them or have taken them for granted, our mothers are always a tremendous cornerstone into the foundation of who we become.
So, in honour of Mother’s Day this year we’re sharing some of our favourite quotes on motherhood, love and wisdom, as said by some of our favourite women:
"A mother's arms are more comforting than anyone else's."
"Right now, after giving birth, I really understand the power of my body"
"I think what surprised me the most about motherhood, as sentimental as it sounds, is how much I love my kids. I mean, I just can’t believe it. It’s like a whole new dimension in emotion that I’ve never experienced."
"My children come first and the career comes in around that."
"As a Mother, your most important job is to be their earthly guide in all things love, integrity, honesty and joy - it’s the entire purpose: to shape these beautiful souls into whole, happy, kind and empowered people."
"Motherhood was the beginning of my own journey asking the question, ‘Why am I here?’ I had to stop and think: What am I going to teach my children? What do I believe in?"
"I’m not a regular Mom, I’m a cool Mom."
"My mother was right: When you've got nothing left, all you can do is get into silk underwear and start reading Proust."
"My mother never gave me any idea that I couldn’t do whatever I wanted to do or be whoever I wanted to be. I don’t know if she ever realized that the person I most wanted to be was her."
"You have to have faith that while your kids can seem to be selfish and concerned only about the word ‘mine’... they are watching you really carefully. If you care about other people, they will too."
"The truth is, that no matter how old we are, as long as our mothers are alive, we want our mother."
"I always try to look at things in a positive way. Even though it has been such a challenging year, it’s a time to regenerate, get creative, spend so much time with family. Just this time I've been able to spend with my children has been priceless."
"It's such an easy time to second-guess everything you're doing. But you have to trust yourself and not overanalyze everything."
