Not all creative careers are made alike, and in the case of this month’s Imbibe Woman, Maurie & Eve’s Creative Manager, Anna Hewetson, the path has been steady and laden with a heavy dose of destiny (if you believe in that stuff). After beginning her career assisting at a local hairdresser, Anna fortuitously happened upon one of their clients - Maurie & Eve founder, Kelly Davies - who saw her creative spark and the rest is, as they say, history. Read the rest of Anna’s story (and her excellent isolation entertainment recommendations) below...
1. Please tell us a bit about who you are and what you do!
My Name is Anna Hewetson, and I am the in-house photographer and Creative Manager of Australian fashion brand, MAURIE + EVE.
2. How did you get into fashion and what keeps you going?
My first job was at the age of 16, assisting in a local hair salon. The business owner was friends with MAURIE + EVE Founder and Designer, Kelly Davies. We got talking and upon realising I was passionate for fashion and fine arts, Kelly offered me an internship. I have since moved throughout various roles in the business and now operate as the Creative Manager and in-house photographer. The latter came about a few years ago when Kel noticed my keen interest in the lens. She allowed me to capture their upcoming summer campaign … and I’ve been shooting them ever since!
What keeps me going is witnessing the collections come to life … it’s such a magical process involving creativity, trust, connection and business. Seeing the hard work Kelly invests into each collection, its story and fabrications, leaves me inspired every time … I feel so honoured to be part of the process.
3. Is there anything exciting and new you’re working on that you want to share with us?
Yes! I am currently planning our next shoot for the new sustainable range (launching in February) … somewhere warm and tropical.
4. Most defining moment in your life to date?
Travelling the world, I have encountered so many life changing moments. A standout occurred last year in the Maldives when we were shooting our first sustainable collection. The shoot wrapped and we all went swimming beneath the stars … upon looking down, our feet were literally glowing with bioluminescent plankton. It is moments like these you have no choice but to stand in true admiration of Mother Nature, her delicate balance and infinite beauty.
5. Pot luck dinner fallback?
Pasta aglio olio with lots of parmigiano reggiano and a good red wine.
6. Favourite way to spend a day off?
Anywhere near the ocean with my love.
6. Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given (or wish you’d been given)?
That all good things take time - be patient.
7. Favourite Book/Album/Movie/Podcast? (We need as many pointers as we can get at the moment!)
Book - The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway
Album - Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request - Brian Jonestown Massacre
Movie - Pulp Fiction
8. What is something you do to help balance work, health and home (it’s an everyday struggle for us!)?
I am so lucky to live by the ocean, so make the most of it with daily walks for mental clarity and creative flow.
9. What marks success for you?
Health and happiness.
10. Star Sign? If you believe in them!
I am a fire sign, Sagittarius.
11. Go-To desk-to-dinner outfit?
The new Tully dress from M+E. Cut from 100% soft cotton and featuring gorgeous panelled lacing and ruffled cuffs, it’s the perfect piece for day to night, just add heels.
12. Silver lining for 2020?
Falling in love.
