IMBIBE Woman: Kira McDonough

IMBIBE Woman: Kira McDonough

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family business?

I am one of four that make up the Estilo Emporio family, a luxury 〰️ lifestyle 〰️ slow fashion label. Our production philosophy continues to honour traditional, artisanal processes using raw, sustainable fibres made in Italy and Spain.

We travel to Europe every few months to live temporarily and to work daily with our local artisan workshops. We predominantly create with raw and organic linen, woven on old looms in the mountains and manufactured by a local artisan in the region, alongside employing a cottage industry all along the Coast. The entire production is hand worked, from the yarn to the finished product, upholding the integrity of true artisanal hand work, with respect for the natural fibre and world in which it grows.

How do you each contribute to Estilo Emporio or is it a very collaborative and creative process?

It is very much a collaborative design process, everyone has their own individual taste, but we share in the same philosophy of the brand and what it stands for. Our brand DNA is strong. We all share the same goals and the same vision; we work together in the same space and in the same atmosphere comparing our vision and ideas. My sister and myself collectively design with our Mother Mardee (so across two generations), which is a real reason why we appeal to all ages.

Tradition and family seem to be at the forefront of your world, do you have any special traditions you’d like to share?

My Mother and I love to sit on a quintessential curb-side European table and people watch. We find international street styles inspiring and we have a game we play: if we see someone visually inspiring, we fill in ideas of their lives, “who they are and where they might be going.” I think this is paramount to design, projecting scenarios of how your customers will be living their lives in your designs. After all, clothing is like telling your own autobiography, written out one clothing piece at a time.

We absolutely love your style, so effortless yet intentional, can you share any styling tips?

Thank you! Two words: Queen Gigi. Our uber cool Mother has always been a guiding light in the evolution of my personal style. I say this because she always involved me in her wardrobe since I can remember. I have learned from her to make fashion fit in with my lifestyle, and that clothes should enable me, not hold me back.

Travel is also paramount to exploring your style; travelling is a conduit to finding things that have reason to be in your life, and in your sartorial expressions. I cannot emphasise enough how important cultural curiosity is for creativity.

My number one styling mantra is, standout! It can be subtle, but make it unique. Quality is also paramount!

What are the three pieces in your wardrobe that you simply could not live without?

At the moment…

  1. Our Margeux Espadrille Flat which is like a Mary Jane Espadrille (heaven!)
  2. Our Balthazar Linen Blazer
  3. My Jacquemus Le Chiquito Noeud Denim Bag.

I like to be realistic when I pack for an overseas trip. The key is to bring items that require little effort but achieve maximum style. Far or near, I never travel without a linen blazer or linen trench. Our new light linen blazer is easily the most versatile (and most loved) piece in my closet. I’ll throw it on over just about anything when I’m in transit or wear it open to elevate an outfit.

Mumma to be, congratulations! What beauty and relaxation rituals have you been leaning on during your pregnancy?

Thank you! I am absolutely obsessed with my beauty routine predominantly featuring my IMBIBE beauty essentials. I love investing the time in my morning and evening routine to give my skin that extra time and care. I will not rush this process! I think mindful, concentrated self care is paramount to waking yourself and in equal parts, preparing for sleep.

I am obsessed with the Melting Balm, I love to double cleanse so I follow this with an oil cleanser. I then apply the Collagen Jelly Peptide Serum, Collagen Protect Age-Defying Oil, Collagen Eyes Lifting Concentrate and blend seamlessly with the Gold Sculpting Tool! I love the Gold Sculpting Tool, it always leaves the most satisfying feeling and plumpness to my skin.

I apply the Collagen Lips Peptide Treatment right before I rest my head on my pillow and it really seals the deal for me… it's really the little things that can make you feel so good!

I have been experiencing legs cramping in my pregnancy and my total saving grace has been the Calm/Sleep Magnesium SuperPowder. It was also such a relief to find a Magnesium SuperPowder that actually tastes good! If I miss even one night without a teaspoon of this super sleep potion, I notice a difference in the restlessness of my muscles and tension.

Travel is a big part of your life, where is your favourite destination for design inspiration and where do you go to switch off?

I cannot imagine a life without travelling. I cannot remember a journey that had not changed me somehow!

I know Positano like the back of my hand, and since all the chaos (from the popularity!) I have learnt how to weave around back streets and avoid the crowds. I love how the mountains and sea wrap Positano with a seamless blend of perspective.

I have an absolute soul connection with the North side of the Island of Ibiza, the landscape and the people really tinker at my bohemian heart. I love to Island hop to Formentera and really, any Island on the Med!

I have recently left a part of my soul in Sardinia, a truly ancient landscape of granite rocks and pristine water. When you see it for the first time it’s hard to imagine a place could be so beautiful, so wild and untouched.

What are your travel essentials?

I carry a travel (support) kit with me on the plane, this time it pretty much included the entirety of the IMBIBE product categories.

You have to absolutely follow a routine and prioritise ritual and self care when in transit. Your body's internal and external health needs all the support it can get when being lifted through the sky and transported to totally different climates and time zones. I hydrate my body and my skin constantly when in transit.

We are also really passionate about nurturing our rituals abroad, it helps us to find our anchor and centre and to feel at home in our bodies and our new surroundings.

We start each day with a lemon (the lemons in Positano are super powered!) water, followed by another glass combined with the Beauty Renewal Probiotic Concentrate. Gut support is essential when traveling as our biome can be compromised when we take our gut across seas and into new time zones where any semblance of routine is thrown out the window and indulgence levels are high.

I'm not a coffee drinker so cacao or matcha in the morning combined with the Miracle Collagen Bioactive Peptide, is my sip-in-harmony and energy boost, the bonus is they synergies well. I use a plant based milk and local honey. It is my total support system!

And a total travel/jet lag hack: Calm/Sleep Magnesium SuperPowder, honestly it is an essential in our travel support pack.

What is on your IMBIBE wishlist?

An endless supply of Calm/Sleep and Collagen Lips - my two absolutes!
